Altars

Sacred spaces where intention, prayer, and presence are made visible through meaningful objects. Altars serve as bridges between the physical and spiritual worlds, inviting connection, reflection, and remembrance.

Awakening

The ongoing process of remembering one's essential nature beneath conditioning, fear, and forgetting. Awakening is less about becoming someone new and more about returning to who you have always been.

Ayahuasca

A sacred Amazonian plant medicine traditionally prepared from the Banisteriopsis caapi vine and companion plants. Often called "Grandmother" or "Mother Ayahuasca," it is used for healing, insight, and spiritual growth.

Beautyway

A Diné teaching that emphasizes living in harmony, balance, beauty, and right relationship with all of life. To walk in Beautyway is to align one's actions with the sacred order of existence.

Breathwork

Intentional breathing practices used to regulate the nervous system, access expanded states of awareness, and support emotional healing and spiritual connection.

Broken

A story many people carry about themselves. Healing the Modern Soul suggests another possibility: that beneath our wounds, adaptations, and conditioning, we may be far less broken than we have been taught to believe.

Ceremony

A sacred container that brings intention, ritual, and presence together. Ceremony creates space for healing, transformation, gratitude, and connection to something greater than oneself.

Curandera

A traditional healer in Indigenous and mestizo cultures of Latin America who works with plants, prayer, ritual, and ancestral wisdom to support healing.

Dharma

A Sanskrit term referring to one's path, purpose, or sacred responsibility. Dharma points toward living in alignment with one's deepest truth and contribution.

Entheogen

A sacred plant, fungus, or substance used to facilitate spiritual insight, healing, and connection with the divine. The word literally means "generating the divine within."

Gratitude

A practice of recognizing and appreciating the gifts, lessons, and blessings present in life. Gratitude shifts attention from scarcity toward abundance and connection.

Hikuri

The Wixárika name for peyote, regarded as a sacred teacher and messenger that supports healing, guidance, and spiritual remembrance.

Ho'oponopono

A Hawaiian practice of reconciliation, forgiveness, and restoring harmony within oneself and one's relationships.

Icaro

A ceremonial healing song used in Amazonian traditions. Icaros are believed to guide, protect, and support healing during plant medicine ceremonies.

Integration

The process of bringing insights, healing, and revelations into daily life. Integration transforms meaningful experiences into lasting personal growth.

Intention

A conscious direction for one's energy, attention, and actions. Intentions help guide healing journeys, ceremonies, and everyday life.

La Dieta

An Amazonian practice of entering into a sacred relationship with a specific plant through solitude, dietary restrictions, and ceremony to receive its teachings and healing.

Lineage

The transmission of wisdom, teachings, and practices across generations. Honoring lineage acknowledges those who carried the knowledge before us.

Los Niños Santos

Meaning "The Holy Children," a traditional Mazatec term for sacred mushrooms used in healing and spiritual ceremonies.

Maloca

A ceremonial gathering space used by many Indigenous peoples of the Amazon. The maloca serves as a sacred container for community, ritual, and healing.

Mara'akame

A spiritual guide, healer, and ceremonial leader within the Wixárika tradition who carries and transmits ancestral wisdom.

Medicine

A broad term referring to anything that supports healing, growth, balance, or awakening. Medicine may come through plants, practices, relationships, experiences, or wisdom.

Mitakuye Oyasin

A Lakota prayer meaning "All My Relations." It expresses the understanding that all beings are interconnected and part of one living family.

Neuroplasticity

The brain's ability to reorganize and form new neural pathways throughout life. Neuroplasticity allows learning, healing, and lasting personal change.

Nete Rao

An Amazonian concept describing the healing intelligence, spirit, or wisdom carried by sacred plants.

Peyote

A sacred cactus used for centuries in Indigenous ceremonies throughout North America. Peyote is traditionally associated with prayer, healing, guidance, and communion with Spirit.

Pneuma

An ancient Greek word meaning breath, spirit, or life force. Pneuma reflects the understanding that breath and consciousness are deeply connected.

Prana

In yogic traditions, the universal life force that animates all living things. Breath is considered one of the primary ways prana moves through the body.

Pranayama

Yogic breathing practices designed to cultivate, direct, and balance life force energy within the body and mind.

Psilocybin

The naturally occurring psychoactive compound found in certain species of mushrooms. Psilocybin has been used ceremonially for centuries and is increasingly studied for its therapeutic potential.

Psychedelics

Substances that can temporarily expand perception, awareness, and consciousness. When approached responsibly, they may support healing, insight, and transformation.

Qi

A foundational concept in Chinese medicine describing the vital life force that flows through all living things.

Remembering

The process of returning to one's essential nature beneath trauma, conditioning, fear, and forgetting. Healing is often less about fixing what is broken and more about remembering what has always been whole.

Right Relationship

Living in respectful, reciprocal, and harmonious relationship with oneself, others, nature, and Spirit. Right relationship is a cornerstone of many Indigenous wisdom traditions.

Ritual

An intentional act that brings awareness, meaning, and sacredness to a moment. Ritual helps transform ordinary actions into opportunities for connection and healing.

Ruach

A Hebrew word meaning breath, wind, or spirit. It points toward the living force that animates life and consciousness.

Set and Setting

A foundational principle in psychedelic work describing the importance of one's mindset (set) and environment (setting) in shaping an experience.

Shadow Work

The practice of exploring and integrating the hidden, rejected, or unconscious parts of oneself. Shadow work supports greater wholeness and authenticity.

Surrender

The willingness to release control and trust the unfolding of life. Surrender creates space for healing, growth, and transformation.

Trauma

The lasting impact of overwhelming experiences that exceed a person's ability to cope. Trauma is often carried in the body, nervous system, and unconscious patterns until it is safely processed and integrated.

Wachuma

Also known as San Pedro, a sacred cactus traditionally used throughout the Andes for healing, prayer, and heart-centered spiritual growth.

Wakan Tanka

A Lakota term often translated as the Great Mystery or Great Spirit. It refers to the sacred, unknowable source that permeates all of life.

Wirikuta

A sacred desert in Mexico central to the spiritual traditions of the Wixárika people and their pilgrimage to meet Hikuri, the peyote medicine.
